The United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Vienna, in cooperation with the Slovak NGO Slovak Debate Association and the Kirchliche Pdagogische Hochschule Wien/Krems, cordially invites you to an online workshop for teachers on Media Literacy and Teaching Critical Thinking on Thursday, 9 November 2023, from 15:00 to 18:00 hrs.
The training course consists of three parts:
Introduction to Critical Thinking
Everyone makes mistakes in thinking and sometimes takes in information automatically without much thought. The goal of this training is to recognize cognitive biases, understand why they happen, why we need critical thinking, and what it actually means to think critically.
Media literacy
Media literacy training will show how the spread of misinformation works, how to distinguish reputable from non-credible media, or ways to verify news and debunk conspiracy theories and hoaxes. We will also highlight the phenomenon of opinion bubbles and echo chambers that are created in the online environment. We will show how to have a constructive and tolerant debate, both online and in person.
How to teach critical thinking
Critical thinking cannot be imparted through lecture or taught by rote memorization. On the contrary, young people need to be educated to it. In this training we will introduce the principles of leading to critical thinking and examples of good practice on how to make it happen.
The workshop will be held in English by Richard Vako from the NGO Slovak debate association www.sda.sk
